VitaSnap is a nutrition coaching app for iOS. This policy explains what information the app collects, what leaves your device, and the controls you have. It is written to match how the app actually works.
If you read only one thing: VitaSnap stores your food log on your device. The only data that leaves your device is meal photos you choose to scan, the barcode or food-name strings you search for, and — if you choose to subscribe — the purchase transaction handled by Apple and our subscription provider. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no third-party advertising trackers.
VitaSnap is built and operated by Tien Tang, an individual developer ("VitaSnap", "we", "us"). Contact: privacy@vitasnap.app. If your jurisdiction requires a designated representative or data controller contact, use the same email and we will route accordingly.
The following are stored locally on your device using the operating system's encrypted storage. They are not transmitted to us, and we cannot access them:
If you uninstall VitaSnap, this data is removed by iOS along with the app. If you switch devices, this data does not transfer unless you have iOS device backups enabled (Apple's responsibility, not ours).
When you tap to scan a meal, barcode, or nutrition label, the captured image is sent over HTTPS to our AI proxy. The proxy forwards it to Anthropic's Claude API for food identification and nutrient estimation. The result is returned to your device.
When you scan a barcode or search for a food name, the barcode string or search query is sent to the USDA FoodData Central public API. The response is the public nutrition record for that food.
If you enable meal reminders or weekly nutrient reports, iOS schedules them locally on your device. VitaSnap does not run a push notification server, and we do not send remote pushes.
VitaSnap offers an optional paid subscription, VitaSnap Pro. If you choose to subscribe:
To be specific, none of the following happen:
| Permission | When it's used | If denied |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | Only when you tap to scan a meal, barcode, or label | Scan features won't work; manual entry still works |
| Photo Library | Only when you tap to upload an existing photo | Photo upload won't work; camera + manual still work |
| Notifications | Only if you enable meal reminders or weekly reports | Notifications won't fire; the app still works |
VitaSnap does not request location, contacts, calendar, microphone, HealthKit, or any other permission.
VitaSnap is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum digital age of consent in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has used the app, contact us at privacy@vitasnap.app.
The app is rated 9+ on the App Store — it contains no objectionable content, and the rating reflects its health & wellness guidance, which is intended for adults.
VitaSnap is informational and educational. It does not diagnose, treat, prevent, or cure any medical condition. The "intake gap" labels and meal recommendations are based on logged food, not blood tests or clinical assessment. If you have a medical condition or are considering meaningful changes to your diet, talk to a qualified clinician.
If you log lab results, those values are stored only on your device and are used by the app to calibrate its estimates against your actual biomarkers. We cannot read them. They never leave your device unless you export them yourself.
Because your data lives on your device, retention is your choice: delete individual entries any time, delete all health data in Settings, export your data before deleting, or uninstall the app to remove everything.
We do not retain copies. For the small amount of operational data that passes through the AI proxy (request metadata for abuse prevention), retention is 30 days maximum before it is deleted from server logs.
Depending on your jurisdiction (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, UK GDPR, etc.) you may have rights to access, deletion, correction, portability, and to object to processing. Because your meal log is on your device, you already hold it; the Settings → Export feature produces a copy. For AI-proxy request metadata (which contains your approximate IP), email privacy@vitasnap.app with an approximate date range and we will purge it. We respond to verifiable requests within 30 days, and you may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
VitaSnap is operated from the United States. The AI proxy may be hosted in the United States or another region with adequate data protection. If you are in the EEA, UK, or another region with cross-border transfer rules, your decision to use the scan features (which transmit images to the AI proxy) is your express consent to the transfer described above.
If you find a security issue, please email security@vitasnap.app before public disclosure.
If we change this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, surface a notice in the app the next time you open it.
